Transgender Speakers Bureau
Transgender at Work
Mary Ann Horton, Chair
Introduction
There is a largely unmet need for a listing of presenters who give workshops
to teach the public about the issues of transgendered people. Many
groups receive requests from businesses, colleges, or community groups
to find out more about transgendered people. It is important to establish
a network of speakers so that this need can be met.
Usually there is a need to keep costs as low as possible. Travel
expenses can dramatically increase the total cost of the workshop.
We would like to have a network of local presenters in every location,
so that a local workshop will always be available at a reasonable cost.
The Transgender Speakers Bureau has been established to help meet this
need.
Our goal is to have at least one presenter available in every major
metropolitan area in the United States. (We will gladly list global
presenters as well.) Each presenter should be either
-
a professional speaker or facilitator, who has been paid to give workshops
and been invited back to repeat, or
-
a volunteer or group of volunteers who is available to speak without charge.
Possible formats include:
-
Speakers. This is an individual who gives speeches about transgender
issues. Usually a question/answer period from the audience is important.
Speakers who themselves are transgendered, or who are professionals working
in the transgender field,
or who have family members who are transgendered,
are usually most effective.
-
Panel workshops. This highly effective format includes a facilitator
who gives introductory information, followed by a group of transgendered
panelists. The panelists give introductory information about themselves,
and a question/answer period follows.
-
Individual workshops. In this format, a single presenter, usually
transgendered, conducts the workshop.
-
other formats.

Transitions That Work is a consulting service for transsexuals who plan to
transition on the job, their coworkers, and their employers. We offer help
in planning a successful transition, guidance for employers dealing with
transition issues, and diversity training about transsexualism. We have
two books available: Transsexual Workers: An Employer's Guide and Working
with a Transsexual: A Guide for Coworkers. We have been guest speakers
for a variety of audiences including professional groups, corporations,
governments, police and fire departments, media, schools and colleges
and the general public. Our Diagram of Sex and Gender that we use as a
teaching tool in our lectures is now on our website. Have a look!
